PhD Student Lauren Hintenlang Participates in Climate Adaptation Field Intensive

UF doctoral student Lauren Hintenlang (Department of Environmental & Global Health, Advisor Andy Kane) was selected from a large pool of applicants from UF and five other consortium universities to participate in the 2022 Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center (SE CASC) Field Intensive at Duke University Marine Lab in North Carolina. This was the fourth Field Intensive experience for UF students that has been supported by SE CASC in collaboration with the Water Institute.

This year’s field intensive focused on Coastal Resilience and Adaptation, weaving interdisciplinarity, stakeholder engagement and science communication into topics of climate modeling, natural and cultural resources at risk, indigenous stewardship and environmental justice. Classroom discussions were paired with field trips to North Carolina’s national seashores and forests, which Lauren said provided “ideal opportunities to talk with locals and park rangers about the experienced impacts of climate change and their strategies for resilience.”

Lauren’s favorite aspect of the field intensive was “interacting with such an interdisciplinary network…from a wide range of disciplines and universities, all coming from different backgrounds but linked by their interest in climate change. It was extraordinary to have conversations where so many different perspectives were able to mingle and jive together to develop ideas and solutions.”
