The UF Water Institute is pleased to announce our newest Faculty Advisory Committee Chair elect, Dr. Mark Brenner. Dr. Brenner’s main field of study is Limnology and Paleolimnology with special interests in tropical and subtropical lakes, and watersheds. He collaborates in projects here in Florida but his collaborations expand to Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia and Cuba.

Dr. Brenner will begin his term as Chair in June 2019, but his collaboration with the Water Institute dates to our beginnings:

“Many of us at UF saw the need to establish a Water Institute that would facilitate research on fundamental and applied questions related to “all things water.”  In fact, the UF WI has done that and much more.  Since 2011, the WI has supported the very successful Water Institute Graduate Research Fellows Program.  The WI website is a tremendous resource for investigators at UF and for outside users, in that it lists >300 faculty members with water-related interests and their expertise.  The UF Water Institute also sponsors a biennial symposium that focuses on the state’s most pressing water issues.  The symposium serves to bring together students, faculty members, agency personnel, state government workers, and investigators from the private sector, to address Florida’s water resources.” During his time as FAC chair, Dr. Brenner wants to make sure that UF new hires are aware of the Water Institute and the services it provides.  He believes that the Water Institute can assist incoming faculty by helping them make professional connections across campus and beyond.  “Given my own interests in tropical lakes and watersheds, I will encourage bringing in Water Institute seminar speakers who work in low-latitude regions”.  He also hopes to encourage maintaining gender and ethnic diversity on the Faculty Advisory Committee, and trying to recruit members to the committee from disciplines that are currently less well represented.
