Convening Innovation at the Water Institute 10th Biennial Symposium

Innovation, creativity, and ingenuity were at the core of the 10th University of Florida Water Institute Biennial Symposium, held February 24-26, 2026. This year’s event introduced several new features designed to provide more opportunities for presenting, networking, and exchanging ideas about complex water challenges and potential solutions for the over 500 registered participants. Participants represented a broad range of disciplines and organizations including researchers, engineers, policy makers, communication professionals, and industry representatives.

The most significant change was extending the symposium to three full days. The expanded program featured 223 oral speakers across 45 concurrent sessions, 107 posters, five plenaries, a career fair and panel, and two networking receptions. A new plenary sessions format provided a shared space for reflection, connection, and engagement. Each plenary brought together three leading experts to present on a central theme, followed by a moderated discussion. One session explored science communication for impact and action, while the other highlighted Florida’s existing and emerging water quality priorities.

The two student-focused events further enriched the program. The Career Fair and Networking Reception hosted representatives from 30 organizations including federal, state, and local agencies, nonprofits, academic programs, and industry. It provided students with the opportunity to speak directly with organizations and gain insight into the skills, experiences, and competencies most valued in their sector. Complementing the fair, the Water Science Career Panel brought together a diverse group of seven panelists who offer their unique perspectives on career pathways in the water sector.

The Water Institute extends its sincere gratitude to the symposium planning committee for their dedication, hard work, and thoughtful guidance throughout the entire planning process. We also thank our sponsors, whose generous support helped make this year’s event possible. Special appreciation goes to the UF/IFAS Office of Conferences and Institutes for their comprehensive support in planning, coordinating, and executing the symposium. Finally, the Water Institute thanks all attendees for their participation, enthusiasm, and continued support in making this year’s symposium truly remarkable.
