UF Water Institute Ambassador Helps Plan Virtual Conference
Water Institute Ambassador Alexis Jackson played a key leadership role in the Society of Wetland Scientists (SWS) 2nd Annual Student Virtual International Conference, held from January 31st to February 1st. As the Education Chair for the Student Section of SWS, Alexis also served as the Workshop Committee Chair for this conference, where she helped design and organize student-led workshops focused on essential wetland science skills. Themed “Wetlands and their Ecosystems,” the event brought together students from diverse backgrounds to explore topics such as wetland restoration, hydrology, biology, and climate change.
With thirty-six participants from around the world, the conference emphasized peer-to-peer learning and engagement. Students gained valuable technical skills through workshops on the statistical program R and remote sensing applications in wetland science. By fostering student leadership, the event underscored the importance of collaboration and inclusivity in the field.
“When creating and conducting this conference, we wanted it to be for the students by the students. The plenary speakers and data science workshops were student-run. It was important to highlight and involve students with different backgrounds and on different paths within their academic journey.”
