Welcome Drs. Rafael Muñoz-Carpena & Katherine Serafin as new HSAC Committee Members
The Water Institute welcomes Dr. Rafael Muñoz-Carpena and Dr. Katherine Serafin as the new Hydrologic Sciences Coordinating Committee members. They have been elected to serve a three-year term, 2025-2028. The Water Institute would like to thank previous committee members Dr. David Kaplan and Dr. Young Gu Her for their dedicated service. Their efforts have been instrumental in advancing the mission of the Hydrologic Sciences Academic Concentration program.
The Hydrologic Sciences Academic Concentration (HSAC) is an interdisciplinary program designed to broaden the skills of graduate students in science and engineering without sacrificing academic rigor. With the wide reach of the hydrologic sciences across the natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and law, nine departments participate in the concentration. The program is managed by the Hydrologic Sciences Coordinating Committee, which is comprised of six elected faculty members. Each faculty member represents a specific hydrologic science topic.
Dr. Rafael Muñoz-Carpena will serve as the representative for topic 2, Surface Hydrology. He is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering whose work focuses on integrated environmental systems analysis and modeling.
Dr. Katherine Serafin will serve as the representative for topic 5, Hydrologic Analysis and Techniques. She is an Assistant Professor in the Geography Department whose work focuses on extreme sea levels and coastal hazards to understand changing coastlines and resultant consequences.
