Thrust Area: Water, Land Use and Ecosystems

The Water, Land Use and Ecosystems thrust area focuses on understanding linkages between terrestrial and aquatic systems. The primary aquatic ecosystems of concern are rivers, springs, lakes, wetlands, estuaries and coastal zones. Research in this area also deals with ecosystem restoration, and water-related policies and practices for environmental protection, such as minimum flows and levels (MFLs), total maximum daily loads (TMDLs), numeric nutrient criteria and best management practices (BMPs). The goal of this thrust area is to develop the basic understanding needed to develop programs and policies intended to reduce human impact on water quality and ecosystem function.
