Dr. Gao specializes in environmental and water resources engineering; contaminant fate and transport; surface and groundwater hydrology; and hydrologic modeling.
His research is interdisciplinary and balances experimental and modeling investigations. Current research efforts include:
1) Impacts of engineered nanomaterials on soil and water quality
2) Fate and transport of pathogens in surface and ground water
3) Colloid facilitated transport of metals and pharmaceuticals
4) Multiscale simulations of colloid transport in unsaturated porous media
5) Water transport through gas diffusion layer in proton exchange membrane fuel cell
