My interest in water resurces relates primarily to their economic use and impacts in agriculture, recreation, tourism, and amenity-based development, particularly in Florida. In the past, I have done research on costs and benefits of water conservation irrigation technologies, and their adoption by agricultural specialty crop producers. I am also interested in the non-market valuation of water resources in terms of the environmental services provided for wildlife habitat, nutrient cycling, gas exchange, detoxification, etc. Although water in the eastern US is essentially an open-access resource at present, it is anticipated that as population and development pressures continue to grow, there will be a need for development of more efficient means for allocation of scarce water resources. Among the likely consequences will be greater government regulation, more water utilities, and the emergence of true markets for water.
