Several colleagues and I are involved in the Water Conserv II project that represents the combined interests of Orlando and Orange County in disposing of reclaimed water including its use in various agricultural enterprises and local housing developments. Research began at the West Orange County site more than 20 years ago and originally involved investigations of water rates applied to citrus and other crops. Presently, there are 100 acres of citrus used for different studies and irrigated with reclaimed water. (www.crec.ifas.ufl.edu/crec_websites/conservii/). The introduction of two bacterial diseases, canker and huanglongbing (greening), to the Florida citrus industry and other factors have impacted the industry. The Open Hydroponic Sytem is a new production technology under study that offers the potential of substantial water savings.
