O?Connor?s program focuses on the application of basic soil chemistry to issues associated with the land application of non-hazardous wastes (primarily biosolids) and the determination and control of the fate and transport of waste constituents. Constituents studied include heavy metals, trace elements, organics, and nutrients. Recent efforts have focused on the interpretation of data in light of risk assessment, sustainability issues, state and national rule development, and the use of various soil amendments to control pollutant behavior and protect water quality. Recent support for research has been from the Water Environment Research Foundation and USEPA, Office of Water Policy, and has centered on characterizing and controlling release of phosphorus from various land-applied wastes (biosolids, manures, water treatment residuals).O'Connor was Acting Director of the New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute in 1985-86, where he was responsible for state-wide research and outreach programs. He is co-author the textbook Soil Chemistry and co-editor of the research book Phosphorus Biogeochemistry in Subtropical Ecosystems.
