My water research programs mainly focus on the function of the phytohormone abscisic acid in water stress responses, including stomatal closure and primary root elongation. My approach to improve water use efficiency involves modulation of root-shoot ratio and physiological acclimation using abscisic acid. Another water saving strategy we evaluate in my research program is the use of deficit irrigation practices that are based on crop evapotranspiration, in combination with drought-tolerant cultivar selection and optimal planting systems. My extension activities include the on-farm demonstration of soil moisture sensors for irrigation scheduling and the use of compost to improve water holding capacity.
