Dr. Cristan is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Silviculture with the University of Florida. He is working with Dr. Patrick Minogue on a Section 319 Grant project on the 'Effectiveness of silviculture best management practices for forest fertilization in pine straw production using sulfur coated urea polymers on excessively drained soils in the Suwannee Valley'. He is also working on other silviculture research but his main research focus is on forestry best management practices (BMPs) and forest water quality.
In 2016, he received his PhD from Virginia tech in forestry with specialization in forest operations and water quality. In his research, he conducted a literature review of forestry BMP effectiveness studies in the United States that was published in Forest Ecology and Management, assessed the national status of state developed and implemented forestry BMPs, and developed a quick erosion estimation approach for stand-level forest operations in the southeastern United States that was based on past erosion studies. He also worked with the Florida Forest Service for two years as an Environmental Specialist II-Silviculture BMP forester.
