Unruh teaches courses in Turfgrass Culture, Landscape and Turfgrass Management, and Golf and Sports Turf Management – core courses in the UF Golf and Sports Turf Interdisciplinary Studies and Environmental Horticulture curriculums. Dr. Unruh’s responsibilities as an extension turfgrass specialist include managing a 20+ acre Turfgrass Teaching/Demonstration Field Laboratory at the West Florida Research and Education Center. He provides for the needs of interdisciplinary faculty by coordinating the necessary resources for their research being conducted on the Turf Field Laboratory; procuring funding to cover operational expenses, arranges necessary equipment loans, and directing the activities of the turfgrass staff that support and maintain the facility. Dr. Unruh implements and conducts applied research projects and he works with county extension faculty and turfgrass managers to provide solutions to the challenges they encounter. His research focus has centered on replacements for methyl bromide for soil fumigation, environmental impact of fertilizers applied to turf, pest management, and the influence of cultural management practices on golf, landscape, athletic, and sod production turf.
