Primary research interests are systematics, evolution, and ecology of freshwater fishes; and protection of aquatic natural areas. Current research emphasis is on phylogenetic relationships, evolution of reproductive behaviors, and speciation processes that have led to the diversity of freshwater organisms. Major research initiatives include: An NSF-funded global inventory of catfishes of the world ($4,688,504 for 5 years). Principal Investigator.
