Roy R. Carriker joined the faculty at the University of Florida in 1977 after earning a Doctor of Philosophy degree in agricultural economics at Virginia Tech. His principle expertise is in natural resource policy, law, and economics. After thirty years as a professor at the University of Florida’s Gainesville campus, Dr. Carriker transferred to the University’s Indian River Research and Education Center at Fort Pierce, FL, in January 2007 to coordinate the teaching program there. He teaches a course on natural resource and environmental policy at both the undergraduate and post-graduate levels, as well as Introduction to Natural Resource Economics and Intermediate Macroeconomics. Dr. Carriker provides statewide leadership for Extension outreach education on public policy as it pertains to natural resources and the environment in Florida. This work specifically has included outreach education and publications regarding Florida water resources policy and law. He was the founding director of the Florida Natural Resources Leadership Institute which teaches mid-career natural resource professionals about conflict management methods and techniques in the context of natural resource and environmental issues in Florida. In 2002, Dr. Carriker was awarded a University of Florida Professional Development Grant and two semesters of professional development leave to study land use law, property law, administrative law, water law, and advanced legal research methods while enrolled full-time at the University of Florida’s Levin College of Law. In 2005 he spent three months as a visiting professor in the College of Economics and Management at Southwest Agricultural University in Beibei, Chongqing, People’s Republic of China, where he taught a post-graduate seminar in natural resource economics.
